Both Benji and I have always wanted to have kids, and we tried on and off for several years...We have been looking forward to becoming Jewish parents even as we stood under the chuppah with a special tallis made by my mother and aunt to be used at our special life-cycle events...Since we decided to be open about our experience, many of our friends have shared their infertility journeys. It has been very gratifying to help dispel the stigma surrounding infertility and the support that comes from having a community support you...We learned about Hasidah while we were in the process of trying to get pregnant through IVF last autumn. We were searching for funding options because we both work for non-profits and the cost of IVF was astronomical and we do not have insurance coverage. Having Hasidah and Idit there for us during our first round before we even applied for the grant meant the world to us.

Our surrogacy was uncharted territory, yet Hasidah assumed the risks of these unknowns, showed flexibility and choose to assist us in spite of these risks. From the beginning Idit showed us kindness, understanding and compassion. We felt listened to and held right at a time when we were fatigued from the process. Infertility has strained our family and our friendships. We had tried to have a baby going on 4 and a half years while watching our friends around us have babies. Their children grew and eventually got siblings and we were still trying for just one. I finally went to the fertility doctor and we had both had labs and tests done with a result of unexplained infertility. It’s a bit hard on us not knowing why we are having such difficulty with having a baby.
Unfortunately, our health insurance doesn’t cover infertility treatment, and our expenses are already accumulating to the point where we worry that starting a family may be out of reach.
